What

Curtain care - making up
Drycleaning
Possible problems
What
do you know about your curtains?
You
probably understand quite a lot about the fabrics in your clothing, but
do you realise that fabrics for curtains and loose covers are produced
in much the same way and need the same care?
Would you for instance, without careful consideration, wash your coat or
suit? How long would you expect an evening dress to be hung in a window
- often open - without harm? Do you complain when your coat begins to
lose its new bloom and some of its colour? When you dust your table and
sideboard do you realise that the same amount of dust has settled on the
curtains and loose covers?
Every care is taken in the production of curtain fabrics, but all
fabrics are entitled to careful treatment - in use and in cleaning. If
they get it, they should give pleasure for many years.
Curtain
care - making up
When
making curtains always allow for possible shrinkage. Different fabrics
shrink by varying amounts and an allowance of at least 6% is sensible.
Even fabrics purchased as shrink resistant may still shrink by up to 3%.
Variations in atmospheric conditions - humidity and temperature - can
cause relaxation or shrinkage of a fabric at the window.
When making up curtains always use as loose a stich as possible to avoid
puckering.
Please remember that no fabric is completely fadeless.
Where practicable, lining is recommended as a protection. When shrink
resistant fabrics are used, a shrink resistant lining is recommended:
alternatively, use a detachable lining.
Generally speaking, a curtain should hang away from the window glass
because condensation causes fabric deterioration and increases the
effect of soiling.
Drycleaning
INSTRUCTIONS
WHERE GIVEN, SHOULD BE FOLLOWED CAREFULLY. This is particularly
important because of the many fibres and easy-care finishes now
available. Do not hesitate to ask you Curtain Care Centre's advice, if
in doubt.
IT IS MOST IMPORTANT THAT CURTAINS ARE WASHED OR DRYCLEANED REGULARLY TO
AVOID THEIR BECOMING BADLY SOILED. Remember soiling can prematurely
weaken your curtains, and cause fading even of the fastest dyes.
Possible
problems
The
most damaging factor to affect curtain material is sunlight. It fades
the colours and weakens the fibres in the material. Unfortunately, this
damage is not always apparent and it only comes to light when the
curtains are drycleaned or washed, factors such as smoky rooms can add
to these problems.
Sunlight damage is the reason linings are added to curtains - to protect
the curtain, and that is why they are often the first to show damage.
Your Curtain Care Centre can also offer a complete relining aervice or
the replacement of Header Tape or adjustment to the Hems at very modest
cost.
Shrinkage or relaxation of the material when drycleaned or washed is
another problem area and this can be in excess of 6%. The good news is
that your Curtain Care Centre has the facility to recover all but the
worst shrinkage which occurs with some of the cheaper materials or when
a polypropylene is present.
Your Curtain Care Centre can also offer a Fire Retarding treatment to
BS5852 part 2 standard. This is necessary for certain business premises
where Public Entertainment Licences are required. |
